The picker calls its difficulty setting run options, and it offers a normal run plus five Heroic ranks. Normal is the zone as it is. Heroic I multiplies boss health by 1.79 and damage by 1.65; Heroic V multiplies them by 2.72 and 2.16, pays 2.5 times the marks, and adds ten modifiers to the run. None of it is bought: beat a zone on normal with a class to open Heroic I there, then beat each rank to open the next one for every class. The table below holds the exact multipliers from build 0.124.0.
| Difficulty | Health | Damage | Marks | Loot and talent experience | Adds |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | x1.00 | x1.00 | x0.50 | x1.00 | The zone as it is. |
| Heroic I | x1.79 | x1.65 | x1.00 | x1.30 | Boss attacks give 15% less warning. Elite packs: elites come in pairs. |
| Heroic II | x1.97 | x1.77 | x1.25 | x1.40 | Relentless: bosses fight enraged from the start, and fiercer below 30% health. Wardens: each guardian slain makes the others twice as tough, and lairs refill sooner. |
| Heroic III | x2.16 | x1.88 | x1.50 | x1.50 | Lean purse: one free reroll, and caches cost a quarter more. Affix: the horde has Bolstering, Sanguine or Explosive. |
| Heroic IV | x2.45 | x2.01 | x2.00 | x1.60 | Old mechanics: boss towers and gazes are back. Unforgiving: a failed boss mechanic hits three times as hard. |
| Heroic V | x2.72 | x2.16 | x2.50 | x1.70 | Withering: regeneration, heals and leech are halved, and revives are slower and weaker. Council: two affixes, and the final boss brings one of the zone's earlier bosses. |
These are the multipliers the picker prints. Health, damage and loot are counted against the zone as designed; marks are counted against Heroic I, which is why a normal run shows x0.50.
Where the setting lives
The picker screen carries three choices: class, zone, and difficulty. Difficulty is the third column, and it only ever offers ranks you have opened in the zone you have selected, which is why a fresh save shows one option and a finished one shows six. Normal carries the label the zone as it is, and the game means it literally: the health and damage a zone was built around are the normal numbers, and every Heroic rank is a multiplier on top of that baseline.
The difficulty is stored per zone and per class, not per save. Clearing Elwynn Forest on a Paladin does not open Heroic in Duskwood, and it does not open Heroic for your Hunter either.
What Heroic multiplies
Four numbers move per rank, and they do not move together. Health climbs from 1.79 to 2.72, damage from 1.65 to 2.16, marks from 1 to 2.5, and boss loot plus talent experience from 1.3 to 1.7. The steepest jump in the table is not rank five: health goes from 2.16 at rank three to 2.45 at rank four, a bigger step than any other single rank, which is the point where a run stops forgiving a slow clear.
Damage rises more slowly than health on every rank. That is the design decision that makes Heroic playable at all. Bosses take longer to kill without hitting proportionally harder, so the fight is a test of sustained damage and mechanics rather than a coin flip. Everything in the zone rises with the same health multiplier, which is why rank four and five feel like a crowd problem before they feel like a boss problem.
Marks are read against Heroic I, which is why a normal run shows 0.5: half marks for the zone as it is. Boss loot and talent experience move on the smallest curve of the four, from 1.3 to 1.7, so the reason to climb is the marks and the gear stars, not the drop rate.
What each Heroic rank adds
Every rank adds two modifiers to the run, printed in the Adds column above and on the picker's own tooltip. Rank one cuts 15% off the warning a boss attack gives you and turns elite packs into pairs. Rank two makes bosses fight enraged from the start and fiercer below 30% health, and makes each guardian you kill twice as tough while lairs refill sooner. Rank three is Lean purse, one free reroll and caches a quarter more expensive, and an affix on the horde: Bolstering, Sanguine or Explosive.
Rank four brings the old mechanics back, boss towers and gazes, and makes a failed mechanic hit three times as hard. Rank five halves regeneration, healing and leech, slows revives, and ends with Council: two affixes at once, and the final boss arrives with one of the zone's earlier bosses as company.
Read rank five as a healing problem first. If your build leans on regeneration, leech or a revive, half of that plan is gone before the first boss, and the Council fight is where the missing half shows up.
Marks, stars and the armory
Marks are the currency the armory spends to raise a gear piece's star rating, and star ratings only open through Heroic. The armory states the rule directly: stars open when your class beats Heroic in the zone the gear came from, up to the rank you cleared. A normal clear opens nothing, so a player who never leaves normal sits at one star no matter how many runs they finish.
The order that works is boring: clear normal once for the zone unlock, clear Heroic I for the first stars and the doubled marks, then use those marks on the pieces the zone actually drops before pushing rank two. Pushing to rank five on a one star set costs more marks than it returns.
Reading the table next to your build
The multipliers apply to the zone, not to your class. A Paladin's 245 health and a Warlock's 165 health both meet the same 2.72 multiplier at rank five, so the class with the self-heal keeps its margin and the class without one loses it. If you have not settled the class yet, the azeroth survivors best class page is the place to start, and the azeroth survivors best race page covers the health bonus that scales hardest here. Both sit under the azeroth survivors guide if you want the zones and boss clock in one place.
What is the hardest difficulty in Azeroth Survivors?
Heroic V. It multiplies boss health by 2.72 and boss damage by 2.16, pays 2.5 times the marks, and stacks ten modifiers on the run, ending with Council, where the final boss brings one of the zone's earlier bosses with it.
How do I unlock Heroic?
Beat the zone on normal with the class you want to run it with. That opens Heroic I for that class in that zone. Each further rank opens when you beat the rank below it with any class, and it then opens for every class.
Is Heroic worth the extra difficulty?
On marks and gear, yes. Heroic I pays twice what a normal run pays, Heroic V pays five times, and beating rank N lets that class's gear from the zone go to N stars. Stars cannot be opened on a normal run at all.
Do the modifiers stack?
Yes. Each rank prints what it adds on top of the rank below, so Heroic V carries the boss warning, elite pair, enrage, guardian, reroll, affix, old mechanic, mechanic penalty, healing and Council rules at the same time.
Can I pick a difficulty on a co-op lobby?
Yes. The lobby browser filters by difficulty and the host sets it when the lobby is created, but a player who has not opened that difficulty for the zone with that class cannot join it.
